Big A** Tapes

Analog experiences in the digital world. Brian’s work looks at the Massachusetts Hip-Hop Archive and creates large-scale reproductions of the tapes in the archive reminiscent of works by Claes Oldenburg, the aim is to elevate the simple tape. The digital recordings in the archive, are low-fi, crackly, and reminiscent of single-track basement recordings popular in the 1980’s – early 1990’s. The raw and unpolished recordings are a juxtaposition of today’s highly polished and heavily filtered Tiktok and Instagram music posts. The forms aim to inspire nostalgia and lift up these early hip-hop pioneers.
